Things seem to be looking up for the Sylvan Hills Lady Bears.
After some internal turmoil on the team two weeks ago, coach Shelly Davis said her players are playing their way out of their troubles.
“We’ve gotten noticeably better,” Davis said after 56-43 loss to Watson Chapel. “We’ve had a good week of practice.”
The difference in their second meeting with the Lady Wildcats was foul shots according to Davis.
“We missed some free throws,” Davis said. “We had some turnovers, but the effort was there and we played hard. We had a chance to be in the game, and we were in the game all the way through.”
Davis said what she saw can definitely be used as a building block going further into their schedule.
“They gave great effort,” Davis said. “Anytime you give effort, we can build on it and go from there.”
The Lady Bears will head north to play in the Beebe Tournament before opening 5A-Central play against Little Rock McClellan.
The Lady Bears face Arkansas Baptist in the opener, and will likely also see host Beebe or Pulaski Robinson.
The Lady Badgers lose Jamie Johnson, but return Kalela Miller. Davis said Beebe’s star guard is “the real deal” after playing against Beebe in a preseason jamboree.
“She can pull up, shoot the three,” Davis said. “All you need is one playmaker.”
The games upcoming will give the Lady Bears an opportunity to work some things out.
“Sometimes it takes five games in the preseason to get some things going,” Davis said.
After having a hard time dealing with failure and adversity at the high school level, Davis said her sophomores are getting better.
“They just need to come out and compete, and get better every day,” Davis said. “That’s what young kids need to do.”
Confidence is important, but Davis said her young players have to learn how to play one possession at a time.
“We aren’t going come out and go on a 20 point run,” Davis said. “We just need to play a little at a time.”
Experience is going to be key. They will get plenty of that in the coming weeks.
