Watching Sylvan Hills basketball coach Kevin Davis on Tuesday during their annual Blue-White scrimmage, the look on his face was a mix of surprise and pride.
After a “teaching” year last season, it looks as though the team he built last year is almost road ready.
“We are deeper than I originally thought,” Davis said. “I believe we can easily play 10 or 12 once we get our injuries straightened out.”
The Bears have talent at just about every position, and should be able to bounce back from a losing year last year and make a little bit of noise.
“I think we’ll surprise some people,” Davis said. “We may even surprise ourselves at times.”
Davis said his Bears are deep at every position.
“We have shooters at the shooting position,” Davis said. “We have slashers at the slashing position. We have rebounders.”
Davis has the luxury of returning all five starters from last year led by Ronnie Hinton, who Davis calls one of the best scorers he’s ever coached.
“He can score the basketball,” Davis said. “Even Archie who had a seven foot wingspan could put it in the hole, I think Ronnie is the best scorer I’ve ever coached.”
Hinton is deadly from long range as evident by two easy threes in the first half on Tuesday. He can also drive and slash to the hoop. Davis said Hinton has the ingredients of a go to player.
“He is our go to guy,” Davis said. “Every team needs that.”
Hinton has been in the Davis system three years and even though he is a bit undersized, Davis said he has next level ability.
“The way he can shoot,” Davis said, “plus he can run the floor.”
Davis spent a year building the Bears. On Tuesday, he gets to take them to Vilonia for a test drive.
