The shuffle of hundreds of people in the Bryant pool area blurs when a raspy voice cracks through the speakers. It’s clear, direct, and something you hear in your sleep.

“Swimmers, take your mark.”

The horn sounds, timers from Sherwood and Bryant start their stopwatches, and swimmers dive.

On this hot Saturday in July, the Sherwood Sharks are on the edges of their folding chairs and towels awaiting results of a meet that will do more than just determine who will claim the Central Arkansas Swim League (CASL) Champion title for the year.

After hours of strokes, the times are tallied and scores are in. CASL declares the Sherwood Sharks as champions for 2013.

Since 2004, the Sherwood Sharks have maintained the championship title. The results of the Bryant meet proclaim them champions for a tenth consecutive year.

Coach Mary Jo Heye is ecstatic about the achievement of the team.

“I could not be prouder of these kids. They work so hard day after day and for a bunch of them, twice a day. Their dedication is inspiration. Bryant was within striking distance until we hit the technical strokes and then the kids put it away. The kids were so fired up to make this the Decade of Excellence…10 years without a loss.”
