Five student journalists from Sylvan Hills High School and their adviser, Tonia Weatherford, attended the state convention of Arkansas Scholastic Press Association April 13-15 in Rogers. Weatherford was named journalism Adviser of the Year for the state.

Senior Savannah Finch placed first in Yearbook Theme Development and senior Deja Middleton placed third in Yearbook Student Life Copy.

Staffs also submitted pages of their 2014 yearbooks and copies of all issues of the school papers. Sylvan Hills’ editors, Finch and Middleton, won top awards (Superior) for Sports Layout.

Senior photographer Allen Wood was awarded Superior for a Thespian Club action photograph. Senior Elizaveta Shkurina earned a Superior rating on her travel blog of Russia design/layout.

Additionally, staff members received 15 certificates of Excellence and 15 honorable mentions.

Senior newspaper editor Shelby Simpkins and sophomores Karlie Cooper and Ashlie Leonard also attended the convention.
