Squabble between neighbors leads to gunfire, arrest

A 35-year-old Sherwood man was arrested on Dec. 22 at his home after police were dispatched there because a man was shooting a gun.

Kevin Scott, 35, 512A Grandview St., was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault (Class D felony) “for engaging in conduct that creates a substantial danger of death or serious physical injury to another person,” states the police report. He also was arrested on charges of possession of a firearm by certain persons, public intoxication, and unlawful discharge of a firearm within the city limits.

According to the police report, Sharonda Stephenson, Scott’s neighbor, called 911. She said Scott came over to her house that is also the residence of her husband, Marcus Bell.

“Stephenson stated Kevin told Bell to move his car and then they started arguing,” according to the police report. “Stephenson advised Bell went outside where the arguing continued and Sophia also joined in the argument.”

Sophia Scott is the wife of Kevin Scott, according to the report.

“Stephenson stated Kevin told Marcus, ‘I got something for you,” and, “I will kill your ass.”

Stephenson said she told her husband to come inside and after he did she heard a gunshot.

“Stephenson stated she ran to the phone and called the police,” states the report. “Stephenson was breathing hard and she appeared visibly shaken. Stephenson stated she was afraid for her life.”

Bell told police that Kevin Scott came over to his home and told him that his wife needed to move her car.

“Bell advised Kevin got mad and told him he would not be staying there anymore,” according to the report. “Bell also stated Kevin told him, ‘I got you,’ and ‘you’re dead’.”

Bell said he told his wife to get on the floor and she ran to call the police.

Police went outside and observed an empty shell case lying in the grass between the apartments of Kevin Scott and Bell.

Officers also contacted Kevin Scott to hear his side of the story.

“Upon my contact with Kevin, I detected a strong odor of intoxicants coming from his person,” states the report. “Both of Kevin’s eyes were red and watery. Kevin advised he got into an argument with his neighbors because they parked in his parking spot. Kevin immediately stated he shot his gun and he shouldn’t have.”

Police said Kevin Scott’s speech was also slurred.

“Kevin advised his gun was in his house and he would go get it,” states the report. “Kevin then stood up and started swaying in a circular motion.

Sophia Scott said she would go get the gun and an officer accompanied her. Police retrieved a Smith and Wesson 659 handgun and a pistol magazine containing eleven rounds.

Sophia Scott told police she saw her neighbor screaming at her husband.

“Sophia advised Stephenson, Bell and Kevin continued to argue so she decided to leave with her stepson,” states the report. “Sophia advised she drove around the block and when she returned she saw Kevin go into their residence and slammed the door. Sophia advised soon after that the police arrived.”

The arrest report indicates that Kevin Scott had been convicted on Oct. 26, 2000, on a felony drug possession charge.
