Chamber Pancake Breakfast set for Sept. 22

The annual Sherwood Chamber of Commerce Pancake Breakfast at Sherwood Fest is slated for Saturday, Sept. 22, from 8:30-10:00 a.m. Tickets can be obtained in advanced by contacting a chamber member.

Sherwood Fire Department set to give entry level exams Oct. 2

The Sherwood Fire Department is preparing to give entry level exams. The written portion of the exam will be held at Harmon Recreation Center located at 51 Shelby Drive, on Oct. 2 at 9 a.m. The doors will be closed at 9 a.m. The physical portion will be given on Oct. 5 or Oct. 6. Anyone interested in becoming a Sherwood firefighter will only be required to attend one of these days. This testing process will be for part-time positions. Applications are available at 400 Lantrip, Sherwood, or can be downloaded from department’s website sherwoodfire.com. Mail completed application to P.O.Box 6689 Sherwood, AR 72124. Applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Oct. 1. Anyone having questions should contact the department at 501-835-0342. The Sherwood Fire Department is an equal opportunity employer.

Sherwood firefighters plan fund-raiser on Sept. 24 for retiree with Lou Gehrig’s Disease

The Sherwood Fire Department is sponsoring a four-person golf scramble on Monday, Sept. 24, at The Greens at North Hills, 7400 Highway 107 Sherwood.

The event is being held to help former Sherwood Firefighter Cyle Harris who has been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Capt. Cyle Harris was diagnosed with the disease and retired in October 2008. Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as ALS, is a neurological disease that currently has no cure and patients are only given 3-5 years to live from time of diagnosis.

“Since Cyle’s diagnosis our union members have dedicated themselves to raising money to find a cure for ALS,” Fire Department Capt./Union President John Sawyer said.

Every player will have a chance to win a 2012 Chevy Z-71 from Russell Chevrolet along with many other great prizes. Benefits from this tournament and silent auction will be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the Arkansas ALS Association.

Teams can sign up to play for $300 per team and hole sponsorships are available for $200 per hole. Anyone interested needs to contact Kevin Crosland at 501-351-5026 or Ricky Snead at 501-772-0471 for more information. Entry forms can be downloaded from the tournament website www.teedoffatals.com

The cost is $300 per team plus free food, beverages and lots of prizes. Check in is at 8 a.m. with the shotgun starting at 9 a.m. Contests include Closest to the Pin, Longest Drive, and Four-Hole in one’s.

12th Annual Hearts & Hooves Hoedown slated for Oct. 13

Hearts & Hooves, 2308 Kellogg Road, Sherwood, is planning its 12th Hearts & Hooves Hoedown on Saturday, Oct. 13, at its facility. Tickets will be $65 per person or tables of eight can be bought for $500 and be listed as a “supporting heart” for the program.

The tickets will provide dinner, dancing, silent and live auctions and a fashion show of the group’s own special equestrians. The event is entirely volunteer-based with all proceeds going to benefit the program. For more information or to buy tickets call 501-834-8509.

Hearts & Hooves are a 501C3 non-profit riding center enriching the lives of people with disabilities through partnership with the horse. Equine-assisted activities allow children and adults with disabilities to work with a horse and certified riding instructors to improve their physical, emotional and mental well-being.

Bill Harmon Recreation Center pool announces new family swim schedule

The Sherwood City Parks and Recreation Department announces the following family swim schedule for the 2012-13 school year, which began on Aug. 20:

On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the pool will be open for families from 4 p.m. to close; Tuesday and Thursday, from 2 p.m. to close; Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.; and on Sunday, from 1 to 5:45 p.m.

Children ages 15 and younger are not allowed in the pool during family swim hours.

Aquatics Classes set for 2012 at Bill Harmon Recreation Center

The Bill Harmon Recreation Center has set the following schedule for aquatics classes for the rest of 2012:

Ages 4-14: Learn to Swim Program levels I-IV; In-person registration takes place from Sept. 17 to Oct. 3 with the program slated from Oct. 8-18; The program will take place Mondays through Thursdays from 5:15 to 6 p.m.

Ages 3 years: Jump Start Swim Team Program. Registration starts Aug. 27 through Sept. 10 with the program taking place from Sept. 5-26; These classes will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:15 to 5 p.m.; The program also will be offered from Oct. 1-26 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:15 to 5 p.m. with the registration period from Sept. 24 to Oct. 3.

Ages six months to three years: Infant (Toddler) Parent Aquatic Program: The registration period is from Sept. 17 to Oct. 3 with the program to take place from Oct. 8-18; The classes will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 5 p.m.

Ages 14 and older: Adult non-swimmer classes will have a beginners and improvers option with registration taking place from Sept. 17 to Oct. 3. The classes will be held from Oct. 8-18 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 6:40 p.m.
