After Wednesday’s doubleheader at Mountain Home, North Little Rock has one more, and Coach Randy Sandefur is happy where the Charging Wildcats are now.
“We’re rocking and rolling,” he said. “Right now, we are playing great and peaking and now is the time to peak.”
As of Tuesday, the defending conference champions are second in the league standings. While a repeat would be nice, Sandefur said North Little Rock’s only goal is to get enough points to make the state tournament.
“Our turning point was when we challenged the seniors,” Sandefur said. “We’ve had great practices and are taking practices to the games. I credit our seniors.”
Last week, the Charging Wildcats (12-8, 7-3 6A/7A-East) defeated Marion, 5-4 and 9-2. Sandefur said North Little Rock struggled a bit in the first game against the Patriots.
“Preston (Oberling) kind of lost it and didn’t have control of the strike zone,” Sandefur said. “He went two and third innings before Jake Sandefur came in. But, he made up for it at the plate going 4-o-4 with a home run. It happens to the best of them.”
In the second contest, Sandefur said Ty Houser threw a complete game and pitched well. He also said several guys hit well including Danny Mitchell who was 5-of-6 for both games.
“Mitchell has been playing lights out,” Sandefur said. “What I like is we have been playing really, really good defense.”
Sandefur knew the doubleheader at Mountain Home was going to be tough. Not only was the long trip a factor, but also the Bombers are improved over last year. North Little Rock finishes the regular season Tuesday with a doubleheader with league leader Little Rock Central.
