Matthews in uncharted territory

North Little Rock Coach Becky Matthews is in uncharted territory with Charging Lady Wildcat track team this year.

Because of various circumstances and issues, the Lady Wildcats are not having a good season and barely have a team. When the 7A Central meet takes place Friday at Cabot, North Little Rock will have five maybe six athletes competing.

“We are going with a slim crew and is the first year it’s been like this,” Matthews said. “I have a bright face every day, but it’s been a disappointing season. But, I can’t control what other people want to do.”

Several reasons exist for the lack of numbers this year. Matthews said several girls got senioritis, a few who came out didn’t want to put in the work and the sophomores didn’t come out like she expected.

One positive is the 4x100 relay has qualified for state. But, one of the girls on that team is has a back injury and her status is uncertain. Four freshmen have moved up and are practicing with the team.

“I’m not sure how they will do,” Matthews said. “The will be able to run and get experience. I’m just going to focus on each girl and her event.”
