Woman dies after being set on fire

North Little Rock police have arrested a 46-year-old city man on charges of capital murder after a city woman died from injuries sustained from him allegedly pouring gasoline on her and setting her on fire.

Matthew Nichols is currently being held in the Pulaski County jail, according to North Little Rock Police Sgt. Brian Dedrick,

The charges resulted after city safety forces at about 5 p.m. Monday were called to 219 Water St. in reference to a fire.

Officers investigated the case where Jessie McFadden, 38, sustained severe burns to about 90 percent of her body.

After police obtained more information from witnesses, Nichols became a suspect in the case.

“Witnesses at the scene said he poured gasoline on her and ignited her,” Dedrick said.

McFadden was transported to the burn unit of UAMS where she was pronounced dead at 12:25 a.m. Tuesday, according to Dedrick.

Police reports indicate that the couple were engaged.
