Three NLR barber shops taking part in the Saturday’s free state health screeings

Three North Little Rock barber and beauty salons will be among those participating in the Arkansas Department of Health free health screenings.

The health department on May 3 will be checking for blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol screenings; body mass index assessments; tobacco, heart/stroke education and more will be available at no cost to adults at participating locations. The event is being held in barber and beauty salons in Pulaski, Clark, Chicot and Jefferson Counties.

A free lunch from Tropical Smoothie will also be provided to those receiving a health check.

Participating locations and times include:

1) Arkansas College of Barbering & Hair Design, 200 E. Washington Ave., North Little Rock, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

2) New Tyler Barber College, 1221 Bishop Lindsey Ave., North Little Rock, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

3) Panache Beauty & Barber Salon, 2525 Willow St., North Little Rock, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“With almost half of all Arkansas adults having uncontrolled high blood pressure, we all have a role to play in reducing heart disease and stroke,” Michelle R. Smith, Ph.D., Director of the Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities said. “Hair salons and barber shops are keystones of every community and are an excellent environment in which to provide health screenings and information,” Smith added.
