The Kiwanis Club of North Little Rock has initiated an “Outstanding Teacher Award” which will be presented several times during the school year to selected teachers in the North Little Rock School District.

The first teacher so honored is Vicki Thomas, first grade teacher, at Boone Park Elementary School. She was invited to the Kiwanis weekly meeting on Dec. 5 where he was presented a plaque and a gift certificate from Red Lobster Restaurant in North Little Rock.

Mavis Cherry, principal at Boone Park, accompanied Thomas to the meeting and introduced her by telling of her accomplishments as a first grade teacher for 12 years at the school.

“I am thrilled to say a few words about why I chose to submit Mrs. Thomas’ name for this award,” Cherry said as she introduced Thomas. “First of all she is every principal’s dream in that we are always

attempting to hire the best and the brightest, Mrs. Thomas truly fits in that category. She is a teacher I would love to clone.”

According to Cherry, Thomas has spent her entire 12-year teaching career at Boone Park Elementary inspiring lifelong learning in every student she welcomes into her class room.

“She provides World Class instruction that is common core based and differentiated for students on a regular basis,” Cherry said. “She not only cares about the academic success of a student but the whole child. “

Cherry said Thomas greets each student every morning with a hug and claims them from the auditorium.

“She asks about their family and their weekends and invests her time getting to know each student,” Cherry said.

Thomas is national board certified and often acts as a mentor to fellow teachers, sharing her expertise with new and veteran staff.

“She has student teachers each year and is an inspiration to them as they begin their journey in the field of education.

She stays late planning and attends all after-school events. Because she has spent her entire career teaching at Boone Park, she can frequently be found connecting with parents and students at a personal level,” according to Cherry.

Thomas is a member of the schools leadership team and a dedicated after-school tutor providing students an additional opportunity to discover the love of learning.

Cherry added, ”William Arthur Ward said, ‘The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.’ Mrs. Thomas is undeniably a great teacher and is deserving of this recognition. We are grateful to have her as a part of the Boone Park family.”
