Church group takes on ‘adopt-a-vet’ effort at Fort Roots

The men of First United Methodist Church in Maumelle are heading an effort to take Christmas gifts to the “forgotten vets” at Fort Roots Veterans Administration Hospital in North Little Rock. Several hundred vets will be surprised with gifts this year, including a visit from Santa. The hospital is a treatment center for neuropsychiatric disorders.

“For many of the vets at Fort Roots, their only Christmas gift will be the ones we give them,” said Mike Tognetti of Maumelle, who is involved with the effort.

“People can help us by donating items to go in the gift bags such as lap blankets, pajamas, warm ups, socks, underwear, candy and snacks. We do ask that all the items be new. Each gift bag will also include a hand-written note thanking the vets for their service and the sacrifices they have made for our country,” Tognetti said.

Cash donations are also accepted and may be mailed to the church or dropped off at Arvest Bank, Bank of the Ozarks, First Security Bank or U.S. Bank in Maumelle. “We ask that the donations be a minimum of $35, which allows us to buy a vet a complete gift bag,” he said.

Drop boxes for the items are located at Bass Pro Shop in Little Rock and in Maumelle at the Greens Apartments, The Links Apartments, The Maumelle Community Center, the Senior Wellness Center, Maumelle City Hall, IHOP Restaurant, U.S. Pizza, Dr. Kyle Skinner’s office, Kroger, and U.S. Pizza.

Checks should be made out to “Methodist Men Adopt-a-VET” and taken to one of the bank locations or mailed to First United Methodist Church of Maumelle, P.O. Box 13984, Maumelle, AR 72113. The deadline to receive items or checks is December 12. For more information, contact the church office, 501-851-2377.
