The annual Cato Homecoming is Sunday, June 1, this year. It is held at the Cato Historic Church and Cemetery at 14000 Frenchman Mountain Road in Sherwood. It begins with a business meeting of the Cemetery Committee at 11 a.m. then a memorial worship service at 11:30 a.m. with a potluck dinner at 12:30 p.m. This year there will be an opportunity for anyone attending to speak for a few minutes remembering what the old church and cemetery means to them or other things they want to share. Emphasis will be placed on music and singing so there will be time allotted for that. There will be a special memorial for those who have died in the past 12 months.
Keith Tyler of Los Angeles, a music supervisor, composer, and arranger, will be playing the piano and offering special music. He is a descendent of the Springer family who were among the first settlers of the community. In the afternoon at 1:30 p.m., he will lead a hymn-sing and make time for any singers or musicians to perform.
The 142 year-old church and cemetery no longer has an active congregation. Donations will be accepted for the maintenance and upkeep of the property which is maintained only by such contributions and will be much appreciated. Those who can’t attend can mail their contribution to Roger Harrell, Treasurer, 149 Cato Road, Sherwood, AR 72120.
