MAUMELLE GIRLS BASKETBALL | No games, no practice make Gilmore anxious

Maumelle Coach Rodney Gilmore has not enjoyed the past week at all.

With a young Lady Hornet team, playing is the best thing for his girls. Unfortunately, both games last week were postponed because of wintery precipitation. In addition, Maumelle (3-11, 2-7 4A-4) didn’t get to practice much as the district cancelled after school activities several times.

“We are back at square zero,” Gilmore said. “Having a whole week off helped nobody.”

Since Maumelle has secured the sixth seed into next week’s district tournament, Gilmore’s emphasis has been on looking ahead at the bracket. The Lady Hornets play seventh-seeded Booneville at 6 p.m. next Tuesday. Because those two teams square off next week, the girls won’t make up last Friday’s cancelled contest with Booneville. The boys’ team makes up the game today, but because Booneville and Maumelle girls had secured their seeds they decided not to play and then have to meet again next week.

Last night, Maumelle traveled to Dardanelle. On Saturday, they make up a contest with Dover that was cancelled last Tuesday. The Dover contest is senior day and begins at 2 p.m. Gilmore is hoping this week can get the girls ready for the district tournament next week.

“Hopefully, we can get into basketball shape,” he said. “I don’t know how we are going to look.”

Maumelle defeated Booneville in the first matchup between the two teams. If they were to beat Booneville next Tuesday, they would face Waldron. Gilmore said the Lady Hornets should have been victorious at Waldron.

“If we win two, we’ll get into the regional,” Gilmore said. “I like playing both of those teams on a neutral court.”
