CAC VOLLEYBALL | Mustangs split on the road

Central Arkansas Christian’s volleyball team, which opened the week 0-1, split a tri-match at Pulaski Academy last week.

Ken Roberts’ Lady Mustangs, who lost a close opener at Jessieville, 26-24, 25-23, 25-20, fell to the Lady Bruins (25-10, 25-21) and beat Episcopal Collegiate (17-25, 25-18, 15-5).

“I think we’re making progress, but we’re still a long way from where we need to be,” first-year varsity coach Ken Roberts said. “But we are seeing improvement.”

He praised the play of libero Alexis Weber and middle blocker Sydnie Jones during the tri-match.

The Lady Mustangs started 4A-Central play Tuesday against Batesville Southside and will continue Thursday when they travel to Maumelle. They’ll play in the Spikefest Tournament Saturday. The tournament is hosted by Mount St. Mary but is played at sites all over Little Rock. At press time, Roberts was expecting more specific information about the Lady Mustangs’ tournament schedule.

They will return home next week for a non-conference match against Episcopal on Monday and a conference match with Marianna Lee on Tuesday.

“We’re just looking for improvement every match,” Roberts said. “I was trying to get everybody as much playing time as I could, especially early, but we’re whittling down the roster.

“It’s going to be easier to hone in on a regular rotation now.”
