Central Arkansas Christian’s volleyball team opened 4A-Central play last week with a pair of wins.
Ken Roberts’ Lady Mustangs opened the week 3-2 overall. They played a non-conference match Monday against Episcopal Collegiate and returned to conference play Tuesday against Marianna. They will sandwich conference matches at Clinton on Thursday and against Pulaski Robinson on Tuesday, Sept. 17, around the Volley in the Valley tournament at Russellville on Saturday.
Last week CAC beat Batesville Southside, 26-24, 25-17, 14-25, 25-15; and Maumelle, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21, before the Spikefest tournament in Little Rock on Saturday. There, the Lady Mustangs went 0-3 in pool play against Van Buren, Little Rock Christian and Bryant but beat Sylvan Hills in bracket play before falling to Magnolia.
“We played some of the best volleyball we’ve played all year,” Roberts said of the tourney. “They were really pulling together. One of our starting setters (Bailey Zini) was out, so we had to go with a JV player, Sydney Foster, and she did a really good job.
“The girls were tired at the end of the day. We only played eight, so they were worn out, but they felt good about themselves. We felt like they were coming together as a team.”
He said in the three-set win over Maumelle, his team seemed to be having fun.
“They were really relaxed,” Roberts said. “I told them at the beginning of the year I wanted them to have fun, but it’s more fun when you win.”
