CAC GIRLS BASKETBALL | Off to Hot Springs, Spa City Shootout for Mustangs

Central Arkansas Christian’s Lady Mustangs are headed to Hot Springs for their post-Christmas tournament.

CAC (6-1) will open the Spa City Shootout against Lake Hamilton at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27. The winner will advance to Saturday’s 7 p.m. semifinal against the winner of LR Christian and Hot Springs Lakeside. First-round losers will move to Saturday’s consolation bracket.

The championship is set for Monday, Dec. 30, at 7 p.m. in Summit Arena.

The other bracket includes first-round matchups between Bryant and Hot Springs and Malvern and Mount St. Mary.

Consolation bracket survivors will play for seventh place Monday at 10 a.m., fifth place at1 p.m. and third place at 4.

Steve Quattlebaum’s team opened 7-4A Conference play in convincing manner Friday with a 48-18 win at Arkansas Baptist.

The Lady Mustangs led at the half, 19-10. They went on a 36-6 run in the middle two quarters to remove any doubt early.

“We had a nice second half,” Quattlebaum said. (Falan) Miller, (Sydnie) Jones and (Sarah) Butler were all held under 10 points but we still won easily.”

Chloe Elkins and Brittney Higgins hit for 9 apiece.

Of Malvern in the other half of the Spa City bracket, he said “I wouldn’t mind a shot at them early.”

Malvern won all three meetings last year en route to the Class 4A state championship.

Rachel Mina led the Lady Mustangs in scoring with 13 points. The CAC defense limited Caroline Hogue, the Lady Eagles’ vaunted 6-1 junior post player, to 11.

The Lady Mustangs were to play a non-conference game with Drew Central at Baptist on Saturday as part of the Lady Eagles’ four-team Classic to conclude their pre-Christmas schedule.
