Only in its second year of existence, the Academics Plus Falcon softball team was much improved over last season.
When asked how they compared to last year, Coach Stephanie Wortham immediately said much better. The Falcons finished this season last week in the district tournament after a second-round loss to Sacred Heart. Their first contest was a forfeit to KIPP Delta.
“We won four games and didn’t win a game last season,” Wortham said. “We showed a lot of improvement over last year.”
Because she had her second child at the beginning of the season, Wortham missed a few weeks with the team. She even saw improvement when she came back to the team full time.
“They were a different team then when I left,” she said. “The same team will be together next year.”
Wortham said as the year went on the defense and hitting kept getting better and noticed the Falcons (4-12) made better plays in tight scenarios. She also said a difference over last year was the girls were able to get in the batting cages more. Of course, a lot of that had to do with the rainy spring. Academics Plus developed a maturity and knew more of what to expect.
Improvement was also made from the pitchers. Freshman Bailey King and junior Shynia O’Neal shared the duties with King the main pitcher. King has been taking lessons, and Wortham is anxious to see her improvement over the season. Also a bowler, O’Neal is coming along and has the arm strength.
“The girls we played against have been playing together forever,” Wortham said. “That makes a big difference. Our girls are excited and are ready to start practice for next year.”
