Academics Plus is in a rare situation over halfway through the softball season. The Falcons have only played two games thus far. A contest last week was rained out, but with Coach Stephanie Wortham having her second child at the beginning of the season, she didn’t schedule any games during that time.
“I knew I would be gone for weeks and didn’t schedule any non-conference games,” she said. “I knew I wouldn’t be out there for them and didn’t want anybody to have to worry about all the equipment.”
The Falcons played conference members Guy-Perkins in March and Nemo Vista a couple weeks ago with both games resulting in losses. Last night, they met Mount Vernon, and that game gave Wortham a chance to see and evaluate her team. Academics Plus travels to Guy Perkins on Thursday.
Because of the rain last week, the Falcons only made it to the batting cages. Monday’s practice was the first real look Wortham got of her team since her return from maternity leave. She spent the time working on situations and what to do when certain situations arise. Even though the Falcons haven’t had much field time lately, freshman pitcher Bailey King is taking pitching lessons, and Wortham says she improves every week.
“I’m excited and anxious to see what we do,” Wortham said. “I missed them.”
