ACADEMICS PLUS GIRLS Falcons return to court after break

Not having a game last week, Academics Plus is ready for its two contests this week. Although North Little Lisa Academy was on the schedule for last week, it doesn’t have a girls’ team so the Falcons haven’t played since Jan. 4.

Tuesday night, they played at Little Rock Lisa Academy and on Friday, they host Wonderview. Academics Plus (6-11, 4-7) won the first meeting with Lisa Academy and lost at Wonderview.

“They are excited for the game tomorrow night (Tueday),” Academics Plus Coach Stephanie Wortham said. “We have one girl (Logan Crow) who went to Lisa Academy, and she said we can’t let them beat us.”

Because the Falcons had extra practice last week, they worked on a man-to-man press and planned on unveiling it against Lisa Academy. Even though they won the first contest, Wortham made sure they understood that wasn’t a given. They had to have the right attitudes and work ethic.

Academics Plus also worked on shooting and rebounding last week. Coming out sluggish after Christmas break, she is hoping this week the girls come out ready to play. She thinks a new rebounding drill might help.

“I found a new drill they like,” she said. “It has a lot of running and rebounding and wears them out. They ask to do it. They get conditioning and rebounding, and they like it.”

Although Wonderview beat the Falcons in the first meeting, Wortham talked to her girls about how anybody can beat anybody on a given night. The main thing is since they had a week off last week, they don’t need to come out sluggish. Wortham also said the defense has to stop Wonderview’s three-point shot and stop the one big girl inside.
