ACADEMICS PLUS GIRLS BASKETBALL | Big changes coming to the Falcons

Academics Plus Coach Ken Holland has decided to shake up the Lady Falcons’ lineup.

After a string of poor performances, Holland is changing the starting lineup for Academics’ Plus conference matchup Thursday against Nemo Vista. The Nemo Vista game is a rescheduled game then the Lady Falcons (2-13, 1-7 1A-5) travel to Abundant Life for a conference meeting Friday.

“I’m not starting the seniors and will start five who will be back next year,” Holland said. “I’m upbeat because I have some young girls who want to play. I’m anxious to see how these girls play against Nemo Vista.”

Last week, the Falcons suffered two conference losses to Guy-Perkins (79-29) and KIPP Delta (50-25). Guy Perkins made 20 three-point baskets which doomed Academics Plus. Junior Lisa Goodwin scored 17 points to lead the Lady Falcons.

“We struggled, and they tripled team Lisa,” Holland said. “We played man and a 3-2 zone and were on them, but they were hot. “

Holland thought his team was prepared for KIPP Delta. After playing with KIPP in the first meeting, he knew the Lady Falcons had a sense of being able to compete, but that didn’t happen. Sophomore guard Cat Harris finished with 10 points, and Goodwin added nine.

“We were up for that game, and I don’t understand what happened,” Holland said. “The seniors are not playing well and are pretty much burned out.”

One thing Holland has to do is find some girls who can take the pressure off Goodwin. As he said, everything runs through her, and if she is not playing well, then the Lady Falcons don’t play well.

“We have to go back to the basics and can’t have every game where only Lisa is involved,” Holland said. “We have to get kids ready for next year and can do that the rest of the season.”

Nemo Vista will be a challenge as Holland says it is a lot like Guy-Perkins. He hopes his team can hang with, and the key is to get back in transition.
