ACADEMICS PLUS BASEBALL Haug delivers in the clutch

Down by three Monday to Guy Perkins in the bottom of the seventh and with one out and bases loaded, Academics Plus junior Michael Haug crushed a line drive over center field. His triple scored three runs to tie the contest at 15. Haug later scored on a wild pitch to give the Falcons a 16-15 victory.

“When Michael scored the guys ran out to him and jumped up and down,” Academics Plus Coach Steven Tew said. “I tell them no matter if we win or lose, we will still run our sprints after the game. They ran them about as fast I’ve seen them run.”

Not only was the win exciting, but it was also the first victory for the Falcons (1-3, 1-0 A5-North) and also first win in as many tries in conference play. While Academics Plus was still plagued by errors, Tew saw improvement and character.

“We have a lot of improvement to do, but we got better in the field,” Tew said. “It definitely helped not getting our spirits down when we were down by three, and it was cold and windy.”

Tew said at times it looks like the Falcons are improving on defense, but then a ball is hit to them and they fumble it. Tew said the difference Monday was the bottom of the lineup hit, they got two-out hits and everybody got on base.

Haug scored during sophomore Garfield Bloodman’s at bat. Bloodman had a 1-2 count when the wild pitch was thrown.

“He played well,” Tew said. “He actually got on base every time, but three times were on errors. He hit the ball right to someone. The first time he was up, he hit a triple.”

Sophomore pitcher Will Redwine started the contest and pitched four innings giving up seven runs, five earned, and struck out five. Haug finished the contest and struck out five and only had one earned run.

“We had a lot of errors in the field and that led to the 15 runs,” Tew said. “It’s like they guys don’t want the ball. We need to change our attitude and do everything in a bold way.”

Redwine was 2-of-4 with a triple and a single. Haug was 2-of-2 with a double along with his three-RBI triple. He also reached base three other times after being hit.

The Falcons were supposed to have a game Thursday, but it was cancelled. Tew was hoping to pick up another opponent, and at press time hadn’t secured an opponent. If not, Academics Plus’ next contest is Monday against J.A. Fair.
