Maumelle, the defending state wrestling champions, will host a high school wrestling tournament this weekend.
Coach Ed Viera said the tournament, dubbed ‘The Hornet Swarm” would be the largest in the state this year and a total of 30 teams from across Arkansas would be participating.
Wrestling starts at 6 p.m. on Friday, Viera and continues on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.
Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Children under 10 are admitted free.
Among the teams scheduled to participate are: Central Arkansas Christian, Bentonville, Springdale, Greenbrier, Little Rock Catholic, Benton, Springdale Har-Ber, Searcy, Mountain Home, Pulaski Academy, Bryant, North Pulaski, Cabot and Conway.
The ‘Swarm’ comes after the Maumelle team finished 11th out of 24 teams at the Diamond Wildcat Duals at Springdale Har-Ber.
Viera said his team was the highest placing squad from Arkansas and the only team in the 1A-5A classification.
He said schools Maumelle beat were Bentonville, Van Buren, Roger Heritage and Greenwood, with four losses coming to schools from Missouri and Oklahoma.
