Softball field supporters gather

The survey is in and now it will be up to the City Council to decide what bond projects to undertake.

A little more than four percent of Maumelle’s population responded to the survey as 772 were received by the city.

Of that, 672 respondents were registered voters in Maumelle.

Mayor Mike Watson said one returned survey was from Roland but he didn’t know if that person had a home in Maumelle or was planning to move.

Of the seven proposed projects, the one that received the most support was the expansion of the Diamond Center to include two new softball fields and two new t-ball fields.

Last week, the Maumelle Softball Association gathered as many as its current players for a photo to show that the program needs new fields.

“This brings the program now to full capacity,” said association president Jack Barr. “The inability to expand has prevented dozens of our youth fast-pitch players an opportunity to play softball in Maumelle. As a result, these players are forced to find alternative softball complexes within the central Arkansas area. Turning girls away is heart breaking, but our fields and teams are at full capacity.”

The complex was originally designed to hold five fields but because of the cost then, the number was cut to three and it has stayed there ever since.

Adding fields would mean more players, Barr said.

“The additional fields would allow … at least 100 additional youth,” he said.

Softball field supporters compared it to the “Field of Dreams” movie from 1989 where the key line was, if you build it, they will come.

Additional fields could also mean that Maumelle would be able to host additional youth softball tournaments that would have a direct economic impact on the city.

Parks and Recreation Director Phillip Raborn said as much at an earlier Bond Task Force meeting and added that in a cost-benefit analysis, adding fields was the best financial outcome for Maumelle.

Adding the four fields would cost $1,050,000, with an annual operations expense of $60,000 making it among the least expensive of the seven projects.
