It seems the citizens have rebelled a bit regarding the location of the new fire substation to be built near the Kroger store. They are concerned about the noise that such a substation would generate near their homes. While I can understand it, I might put up with a little noise to have emergency services nearby and continue to keep my home insurance costs down.
Have you ever heard of “NIMBY?” It stands for “not in my backyard.” We believe that certain developments are needed in society but should be further away.
We are all in favor of having sports stadiums, providing rehab facilities and helping the homeless, but we don’t want in our backyard.
These “Nimbies” are asking for a 60- to 90-day delay on the final vote. According to Alderman Preston Lewis, he still favors voting for the substation being located there as planned but would support a delay in the voting. [EDITOR’S NOTE: The station was delayed until April 21 as Mayor Mike Watson will look at alternatives until then.] I’m not sure why the citizen resistance came up only weeks before the vote, when it has been coming for months. Stay tuned.
Changes on the Boulevard
The new Sherwood Urgent Clinic opened recently. They are a walk-in medical clinic located just off the Boulevard on Audubon Drive, just in front of the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market. I assumed they were based out of Sherwood, so, why wouldn’t they call our location Maumelle Urgent Clinic?
Well, it seems they are named after Dr. Chad Sherwood, who is the CEO of an Arkansas group of clinics with seven other locations in Central Arkansas. They are an “affiliate” of Urgent Team, headquartered in Nashville, Tenn., with 21 centers throughout Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee.
That gives us two walk-in clinics in the area, with other being St. Vincent, housed in Wal-Mart. Let me hear about your experiences at either clinic. They are open seven days a week. Check their website, sherwoodurgentcare.com, for exact hours.
I noticed that the bike shop located near Senor Tequila has either moved or gone out of business.
It appears that our new liquor store going in next to Starbucks will be opening soon. I have left two messages for the owners to give me more details about the store, but so far I don’t rate a phone call.
I do know that Brent Bradley’s HealthMart will be moving to the space now occupied by the liquor store on Club Manor Drive. This will give the pharmacy more space and a much-needed drive-through window. I’ve heard the move by the liquor store will happen at the end of April and then Bradley’s will move in May or early June.
I saw a new dental clinic for Dr. Bryan Austin was opening on Highway 10 in Little Rock. I asked Dr. Austin’s office if he was moving to Little Rock and they assured me they were keeping their Maumelle location. They said another dentist would operate the new clinic.
We also have a new pediatric clinic coming in near the Hibbett Sports store. More information on that to come.
I noticed that they are clearing away land on the Wal-Mart parcel to add something. Anybody hear about what’s going in?
Wal-Mart gets low rating for customer service
A recent news article surveyed customers and found that they rated Wal-Mart service very low. As a matter of fact, the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) ranked Wal-Mart’s service as the worst retailer in the country. Walgreen’s came in at fourth-worst.
What’s your customer service experience like at Wal-Mart? If you’re like me, the store on the Boulevard is a frequent stop because of its convenience and you can cover a lot of ground for several types of items. Other than the person who checks you out, I rarely see an employee, much less one that would give you any help or has a smile on their face. One exception is Mr. Willie, who’ll give you a big ole, “BAM” when you’re coming or going.
See you on the Boulevard.
