Using a mix of money and donated supplies the Maumelle chapter of the AARP plans to make a significant contribution to Pine Forest Elementary and Maumelle Middle schools this week.
“We have a fund that we contribute to every year,” said member Beverly Alberson. “We use that money to buy, among other things, school supplies for our local schools.”
Members at a meeting last week also brought in supplies they had purchased on their own that would also be given to the schools.
“We’ve been doing this for the last four or five years,” Alberson said. “It is something that we do for community service.”
School starts on Monday, Aug. 19 and Alberson said member Judy Gregory would take the contributions to the schools.
“We give the supplies to the school counselors,” Alberson said. “That way they can spread the donations around to benefit the greatest number of students.”
Alberson said some 45 members of the AARP either contributed money or supplies to the drive.
