The Jacksonville Red Devils won the Class 5A boys state title Friday night by defeating Alma, 56-53.

Justin McCleary was named the title game’s Most Valuable Player after he scored 9 points for the Red Devils and added four assists, three steals and pulled down five rebounds for an all-around game.

In double figures for Jacksonville (26-4) were Aaron Smith, Sergio Berkley and Keith Charleston with 17, 14 and 13 respectively. Charleston also had 10 rebounds and three blocks. Those four, plus Kevin Richardson, were Jacksonville’s five starters and scored every point for the Red Devils.

Alma (23-7) was led by senior Brock Widders and his 31 points. Widders scored 20 of Alma’s last 22 points as the Airedales, but a tying three-pointer from him rimmed out as Jacksonville held on the for the win.

A crowd of 6,375 saw the game and filling Barton Coliseum about two thirds full.
