The city of Jacksonville is in the process of constructing a sidewalk along Marshall Road courtesy of a grant recently received from the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department.

Jim Oakley, director of the Jacksonville City Public Works Department, said the state grant totals about $100,000. The city received it with the understanding it would provide a $20,000 match.

“That will be $120,000 worth of sidewalks,” Oakley said.

Once complete, the project will provide 3,200 linear feet of sidewalks going from MacArthur Drive to Smithwick Street.

Marshall will receive sidewalks on the east side of the roadway, according to Oakley.

The state funding comes from Arkansas enhancement funds designed to provide more sidewalk-related infrastructure around the state.

Oakley said the city of Jacksonville has been working to construct additional sidewalks this year.

Jacksonville this year is building handicapped accessible ramps in front of the Wendy’s Restaurant on Main near Bailey streets. In addition, the city is building new sidewalks near City Hall from Oak Street to Elm Street, he added.

Oakley said this year’s work would represent a $150,000 expenditure on sidewalks within the city of Jacksonville.
