Four candidates have already been certified and numerous other candidates are believed to be interested. O’Brien wanted to clear up any confusion that might have arisen from the first city council ordinance which mistakenly contained a later deadline.

Controlled burn at air base

Little Rock Air Force Base has hired the U.S. Forestry Service to conduct a prescribed burn in the 277 wooded acres behind base housing scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Feb. 23 - weather conditions permitting. As a result, smoke emissions coming from the base may be visible from surrounding areas.

The burn area is an old Post Oak savanna which is naturally maintained by fire. The burn is intended to reduce the chance of wildfires and improve wildlife habitat. Previous prescribed burns were conducted in these areas in 1997 and 2003.

The Forest Service will bring a trained burn crew with equipment to conduct and control the burn. The 19th Civil Engineering Squadron will scrape the perimeter roads around the two areas south of base housing to provide a firebreak. The Forest Service will establish a firebreak behind base housing before they burn directly behind housing.

If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact 19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs at (501) 987-3601.
